The 1992 election defeat of Lynden Pindling, the result of increasing numbers of allegations of narcotics corruption against senior government members, ended a period of 25 years of continuous rule by his PLP. Pindling was instrumental in steering the Bahamas to independence, ending the domination of the white elite "Bay Street Boys" in Bahamian politics and bringing blacks into the political process for the first time. The new administration, under Hubert Ingraham, has concentrated on tightening up ministerial accountability in government. However, investigations into the Pindling administration will probably take several years to complete.
